I'd like to start doing some proper listening to James MacMillan, whom I hear from time to time in concert with pleasure, but have yet to do so thro recordings.

Where should I start?
The Confessions of Isobel Gowdie - a powerful; and remarkable work. I have to say I would stop there.

Hiya verismissimo,
I would suggest these two recordings:
MacMillan:
The World's Ransoming for cor anglais and orchestra (1996);
Cello Concerto (1996);
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/Osmo Vanska,
Christine Pendrill (cor anglais) Raphael Wallfisch (cello)
BIS-CD-989
James MacMillan Choral Music
Jubilate Deoa (2009);
Serenitya (2009);
Magnificat and Nunc dimittis (1999):
Tremunt videntes angeli (2002)
On Loveac (1984)
'here in hiding' (1993)
Give me justice (2003)
The Lamb has come for us from the House of David (1979)
Le tombeau de Georges Rouault, for solo organa (2003)
Wells Cathedral Choir/Matthew Owens
Jonathan Vaughn, organ
William de Chazel, solo treble
Recorded 2010 Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, Wells, Somerset
Hyperion CDA67867

I'd venture also onto Veni, Veni Emmanuel and Triste (rather a good NAXOS coupling with Colin Curie) - but I, too, find diminishing returns with each successive work.
