First thing this morning I got out the ancient SAGA LP of Starker playing the Kodaly Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello.

What an amazing work it is. And played with such precision and passion.

Ams, I watched this last night - staggering playing.

I've been listening repeatedly to the Natalie Clein CD as it's such an amazing work (heard her play it live) - but I've just ordered the Starker - when I last looked it was very expensive but there seem to be several reasonable offers on Amazon, one of which I've snapped up.

Natalie's not far off the pace in this work and her Guadagnini cello sounds lovely, but Starker is incomparable.

I ordered the Mercury Dvorak record as I have very little of his playing and it is a compelling and immensely musical account if lacking the last degree of emotion that Casals,Fournier and Tortelier to my ears bring to the piece . Very pleased to have it though.

I should add that I think that it is coupled with an exceptional, sensitive and charming account of the Rococo Variations .
