In my days of listening to R1, that sort of remit was served during the late hours of the evening only.
is there a similar remit for R3, FF?

This is the age of Britpop, ts

        The nearest is this mention:

        4. Overview of aims and objectives

Radio 3’s programmes should exhibit some or all of the following characteristics: high quality, original, challenging, innovative and engaging, and it should nurture UK talent. Radio 3 should place a special emphasis on live and specially recorded music. The schedule should also feature commercially recorded music, including historic recordings.

Radio 3 should aim to enrich the cultural life of the UK and reflect its musical and arts agenda. The service should aim to educate audiences about music, broadcasting a wide range of programmes that expose listeners to new and sometimes challenging material they may not otherwise experience. It should commission new work from composers, musicians and playwrights and draw on the best talent from across the world to create its output.

        R3's SL also states:

"5.1 Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence
Radio 3 should make a very important contribution to this purpose amongst its audience. It should be one of the most significant commissioners of music in the world. It should engage both established and emerging talent [NB not specifically UK talent - viz New Generation Artists] - and provide opportunities for performance by the BBC orchestras, choruses, the BBC Singers, other soloists and ensembles. Radio 3 should also maintain broadcasting relationships with other UK orchestras, opera companies and festivals. The station should find innovative ways to present live and recorded music to UK listeners.

5.3 Reflecting the UK’s nations, regions and communities
Radio 3 should contribute to this purpose amongst its audience. It should broadcast concerts and events from venues across the UK.

5.4 Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK [a BBC 'Public Purpose' and therefore the same for all services]

Radio 3 should contribute to this purpose amongst its audience, by working actively with partner broadcasters to broadcast highlights of international musical life to British audiences

Its world music coverage should regularly feature musicians based in the UK. In its coverage of the work of foreign musicians, Radio 3 should often explore the cultural roots of those communities that have settled in the UK.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

You would think that a radio station operating under those guidelines would be compulsive listening......

edit: My casual teatime post has turned into a thread !!!!

As regards your question about 'British Music', when they surveyed audiences for Charter renewal, in the BBC's typical 'one size fits all' manner, they asked R3 listeners how well they thought R3 dealt with British Music.

Now, in a narrow, specialised way, I can see that the question has a point, particularly to enthusiasts. But in a more general sense - suggesting some kind of broad obligation to serve British music in particular - it seems nonsensical. 'Foreign' artists and 'foreign' music are the very stuff of the classical music world, or pehaps one should say that nationality has little relevance.

My original (rather casual) comment was really aimed at the Proms rather than R3 in general.
I don't really have a problem with something of a bias towards the local though. If British radio doesn't champion British music, (to an extent) who else will do it? the point is not in focussing on music specifically because of its "Britishness", but because it is exists, and deserves a chance, and if it doesn't get a chance here, it is far less likely to elsewhere.
And of course that goes for stations in other countries too.

We don't (at least I haven't heard people) take issue with BBC local radio promoting local pop music talent, which is something that they do.

Edit...off to the "World Music " sub forum now........

Mr Ferneyhiccup, a persuasive case for the Defence!

And yet... and yet... an Arnold or a Rubbra symphony cycle would be so much more brave and interesting than a Tchaikovsky cycle, wouldn't it?

Maybe next year for the next 3 RVWs from Manze...?

Any more for the Prosecution, Mr Brassymaestro?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                      well I haven't checked Ferney's maths.....no doubt it is spot on !!

It's interesting how much British music is there in total. I would guesstimate somewhere in the region of 15/20 % of the total, or more accurately 3/4 hours per week.
looking at the schedules, much of the music outside of the big hitters (RVW/BB/Holst) is programmed in the late night or chamber proms. Not much is in the high visibility slots of the evening proms. As our man in court No 1 suggests, it would be interesting to see what effect a Rubbra or Arnold or Simpson symphony cycle (even over a few years) would have on perceptions about their music.

Not much point in playing numbers really, but the total is skewed by the high level of BB this year, naturally enough.

                      Bums on seats, I guess.....
(not meaning the corporates, obviously !)
