Condolences to his family and to his many colleagues, students and admirers all over the world.

He and his music-making have meant so much to me, I'm almost speechless at the loss. He had been rather poorly of late, since the death of his wife really, and as the cancellations mounted up I began to fear the worst. I last saw him at RAM conducting the Academy orchestra in a wonderful performance of Sibelius symphony no 4.

Oh no - this is terrible news. I first knew him when he conducted the Kalmar Orchestra and the Chelsea Opera Group, about 1950 and had only just given up playing in an orchestra.

I can't say more, just how deeply sad I am and know my surviving colleagues from the Music Library, who aren't on line, will share my sadness. As others have said, his Berlioz, Mozart, manyother composers, were the tops.

RIP Colin, condolences to his children.

He conducted the first symphony concert I ever saw as a teenager late 60s and I went on to see him many times with the BBC SO at the Proms, when he seemed to be on almost every night. As with others above, he will always have a special place for me.

Well I can only echo the sentiments expressed so far on this thread. A very sad loss indeed. My Wagner obsession was born when I attended the ROH Ring cycle in 1980, conducted by Sir Colin, and he very kindly signed my programme at the Stage Door at the end of Gotterdammerung. It is in front of me now.

                  RIP.

I'll echo the sentiments of others who have written already. I loved his Mozart, and also liked his performances of Stravinsky, including the Rite, plus of course his Sibelius. Recently he was exploring Nielsen, and I think I last heard him at the Barbican with a Sibelius and Nielsen programme. Sad to think that we won't be able to hear him in the concert hall or opera house again. I shall play some of my favourite recordings by him this week.

A really huge loss. He did so much over a long and distinguished career. Personally, his championing and recordings of Tippett for Philips were a revelation for me (and no doubt many others) and are what I'll treasure the most.

                            Forgot to add Britten.

A terrible afternoon for me. Good night, dearest.

With much regret I have just seen the following:

The London Symphony Orchestra has announced the death of its longest-serving principal conductor, Sir Colin Davis, at the age of 85.

Yes I have that recording of the Emperor and the Symphonie Fantastique too. Davis was a champion of Tippett's music - his 1967 recording of the 2nd Symphony immediately springs to mind. Thank you Sir Colin.
