BACH: A PASSIONATE LIFE with JEG, BBC2/hd, 30.3.13 plus redbutton performances after

John Eliot Gardiner goes in search of Bach the man and the musician.

This may well be worth an Easter watch, JEG being an articulate guide - plus, via the 'redbutton', complete performances of featured works afterwards...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Jeggers? Has he achieved official National Treasureā„¢ status yet? Or am I confusing him with Jagger?

Thanks Cali, I've ringed it round in RT for tomorrow.

Just been 'listening' to Rattle and the Berlin Phil from Singapore tonight on BBC4. I know I have tinnitus but the opening of Mahler sym 1 was inaudible for about 15 minutes. It's not that quiet, was it a bad transmission.?

I saw a bit but I find SR tough to watch... It did seem quiet.

Not sure. I've never called him 'Jeggers' I don't think...

surprised that BBC2 has time for music in its busy cookery schedule - something of a JEG 'weekend' what with the marathon on Monday
even been persuaded to do one of those 'Five Minutes' interviews
Conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner talks to Matthew Stadlen about the pleasures and challenges of his job, his favourite piece of music, whether there will ever be another Beethoven and why farming is so important to him.

              JEG - Bach documentary.

Airing on BBC 2 tonight, could be interesting:

Fear not! I'll hook them together!

This was posted on the J.S. Bach thread on Composer of the Week Board by Calum yesterday but I think it could join here.
Bach will never shirk an opportunity to box our ears in the interests of bearing witness to the truth, but his music gives a glimpse of how the angels might sound if only we could hear them play, writes John Eliot Gardiner

I shall watch this, but one does wonder how much supposition the programme infers into JS Bach The Character in the light of scant evidence.

Ooops, sorry Caliban...I don't always have time to look at all the threads, so I just thought I'd post a reminder in case. Anyway, I will be watching with interest!

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this programme...JEG came across very well, the story-telling, pictures and performances were first rate, in my opinion.

Great programme I think. No talking down, no attempt to do it all - just an illuminating focus on a number of facets of this phenomenon that was Bach.

If there's one thing that the R3 baroque-fest has brought back home to me (hardly a revelation, but confirmed by further exposure to the rest) is that Bach is in a totally different league from everyone else (at the time, and since as far as I am concerned. His music for choir and instruments is about as good as it gets, full stop.)

Bear in mind that on the red button now until 2.25am (!... presumably on a loop) are full versions of some of the performances in the documentary. (On Freeview, it's also available by selecting Channel 301 - which is the channel to which the redbutton shortcuts I think)
"...the isle is full of noises,

That Cantata movement for two sopranos - can't recall the number - was absolutely exhilarating, in particular.
