A R Strauss box I like, largely because of the LAPO Mehta big works, possibly my favourite Heldenleben, Also and Sym Dom but also some good Maazel and Dorati.

I think I got it for less than half the current used price. Amazing how many of the Decca boxed sets appear to becoming like hen's teeth!
so, you got it for less than £133.32? A real bargain then

Read my words, Roehre, I said the USED price -I think I paid about £12 actually!

Always been keen on Klaus Tennstedt's version with the LPO (the one coupled with his Four Last Songs with Lucia Popp)

It sometimes seems like that in inferior performances, but in the best ones (Kempe/Dresden, for instance), I agree the later sections come through as at least as good as the opening. The lilt of the 'Dance-Song' is irresistible in that Dresden performance for example....

Yes! I enjoy it once in a while. It was on the bill on the only occasion I've heard the Berlin Phil in the Philharmonie - Zubin Mehta conducting - and was splendid... and I think we heard it at the Proms a couple of years back. Some of the tender music is beautiful, and properly played (plenty of Schwung), the final movement is exhilarating

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I know, I know, but this was too beautiful to leave it alone....

No, mine was longer ago, in the 90s. I think 'Sinfonia Domestica' is one of Mehta's party pieces. I recall the other half of the programme was Hindemith's 'Mathis der Maler' (didn't impress me then any more than it has at any other time )

Interesting to see that clip though, thanks mercia

Extensive testing led to a surprising 'winner' for me - the performance by the Vienna Phil under .... André Previn (Phillips, nla.). It displaced the Karajan in my allegiance, it seems to let the music speak and breathe for itself more, to my ears.
A thanks for the recommendation for Previn's recording and the endorsement of other forum members: I found a very good condition and reasonably priced second-hand copy which I listened to last night, and I agree it's a special performance (haven't heard the wind serenade yet).

I've heard of identifying with certain music BBM but that does seem to be taking things to extremes
