had a rather stressful few days at work, and opted for the soft option ( travelwise at least) of Westminster.
I'll jot a few lines later on. A very therapeutic couple of hours it was.

Sorry to have missed the Elgar/Dean concert, but so it goes.

I'd never heard the Schumann performed live, so that was quite a draw for me to this concert. Actually, never heard of the performers either, (AFAICR), but it all looked tempting enough to keep me away from one of the all time great Elgar 1's across town in the concrete jungle.

THe first three pieces for Quartet only were nicely balanced, and a very interesting mix of music. THe Webern was a treat, the Suk lovely, and the Mahler carried the unmistakable stamp of class.

However it was the Quintets that most of the dreadfully small audience were there for. Looking around SJSS as a first timer, you have to wonder what the acoustic might do to a balance of Piano and Quartet, but all was fine in the Dvorak, perhaps due to Tirimo keeping things a bit under wraps. All nicely carried out, and Dvorak like this is hard not to enjoy.
The ensemble is a young one, and they create an ambience elegantly somewhere between earnest and exuberant, and I really took to them. Some beautiful playing, particularly the Cello, but from each of them at times,and I'd certainly go to hear them again. Seems to be a group with a good musical democracy too, all leading the music at appropriate times.
The Schumann of course , requires the careful handling that a great piece deserves. I thought it got a very fine treatment, controlled passion , and a good rapport between piano and strings. They certainly all seemed to enjoy the experience of playing together, and the audience , though numbering only a couple of hundred, were extremely appreciative, and rightly so.

If the Minguets come to a town near you, give them your support , is my advice.
A really therapeutic evening's music.

the incomparable Bellowhead , at Salisbury City Hall last night.

just had to see them on their farewell tour. The cheer at the end on " New York Girls, " which concluded the main set, was, I think, the loudest I have ever heard at a concert. A great night. The live scene will be much, much poorer without them


Seen them around 10 times, and they were 10 great nights out.

I'm ashamed that I didn't stay true to my word about the booking fee. I was very angry at the time, but I caved in the night before the gig

They were very good, but not quite as good as last year's London gig. The material based on 'The Sound Of Music" is fun, but I'm not sure it's strong enough to occupy about 20/25% of the set-list.

They did a lot of stuff from WAT and Spectre (the best thing they've ever done) some covers, Leben Heist Leben, but not Geburt Einer Nation, Warme Lederhaute or Tanz Mit Laibach
