John Ayldon: another one to add to the Reaper's tally

Sad news for the D'Oyly Carte devotees among us.
John Ayldon, who has died aged 69, was a long-serving member of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, singing all the major bass-baritone roles in Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas.

Not many of the 'Old Cartes' left now!

Ah! The Brian Blessed of the last D'Oyly Cartesians ("I think, therefore I ham") - I greatly enjoyed his Mikado, and 69 is no age.

Yes, he had a big voice for a man of apparently fairly slight build. Sadly I never saw him perform live but have enjoyed hearing him on recordings. It must've been tough having to follow Donald Adams in those roles.
