    Katharina Wolpe RIP

or Katarina as she used to be called. HS mentioned that recordings of hers were played in the interval of last night's concert and as I knew her very slightly years ago I looked her up on Wiki.
In the late 1960s she called at my place of work, sometimes with Lawrence Leonard or Malcolm Arnold, to chat with my boss. I assumed that with a composer father she had a privileged musical background but I couldn't have been more wrong. She was separated from her birth parents as a small child and experienced life in Germany as the worst possible time. I can't quote it all but if you don't know her inspiring story look her up on Wiki.

A lesson for me - never take people at 'face value'. I shall attempt to find her interval programme on iPlayer if I can.

Just found this thread. Very interesting, quite a few of her recordings on spotify, including the CD of her Father's works, which I am having a look at. As you suggest, a fascinating life story.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Thanks teamsaint. Well at least one member agrees with me. I can't get to concerts now, have tinnitus and various other things and my musical memories are about all that are left. Aaaahhh.

I believe I heard that there is to be a programme on KW some time in the future. She is still playing I think. Correct me if this is wrong.

She is still playing. listed for a recital in Cardiff in March next year.
There is an interesting read here

Great to see her championing C20 music. I am certainly going to try to hear the Lutyens stuff...she seems to have had a good deal written for her.
Your memories from your working days take us down some interesting paths, Salymap...I bet Malcolm Arnold was an interesting chap to meet !!

          Katharina Wolpe

Martin Handley on Breakfast this morning trailed his own interval programme next Wednesday 23 January, talking to the pianist Katharina Wolpe about her extraordinary life. She was stateless at thirteen and roamed Europe, being befriended by, among others, Braque, Samuel Becket and Humphrey Bogart, whose patronage helped her to become a concert pianist. Sounds like a programme not to be missed.

Thanks for that Kernel. I've noted it and some time ago I started a very short thread on her. Can't find it of course.

We seem to have two threads on KW with the important information that Martin Handley is going to talk to her in the interval of the concert on Wedn 23rd January on the other one.

Perhaps a Host or ff could put them together- PLEASE
