    The Defining Traits of Symphonists

    Driving along to Brahms and Elgar over the past couple of days, both composers whose symphonies are relatively new to me, I was struck by the aspects of these works that almost seem like calling cards or symphonic traits specific to each composer.

    With Brahms, it's his use of timpani and pizzicato string playing.

    Elgar: the harp. Is there any other symphonist who was such a fan of the harp?
