The orchestral music of Tchaikovsky

Manfred Symphony has to be oe of my favourite works by Tchaik! I have Petrenko, Jansons. One of my favourite bits is when the organ comes in!

Oh yes! I first heard this work at a concert in Leeds Town Hall in 1981; the Bournemouth SO under Uri Segal. I was greatly enjoying the joyful noise of the Finale and was wondering how the composer was going to top this as a climax when ...

Well, I know that thbis is a pretty, much rather a broad spectrum of things, but I was looking for the rarer music that Tchaikovsky wrote for orchestra?

One or two rarities in this set if you don't mind downloads.
Cheap as chips too,I think it was even cheaper when I bought it.

I was lucky enough to see The 3rd orchestral Suite at The Proms a couple of years ago, a great introduction to a terrific work.

Mind you, I can't be doing with the Mozart one.

Its also surprising how many people don't know the lovely first symphony.

There was a superb disc that Sir Colin Davis made with the ROH Orchestra of ballet music and other orchestral items from the operas.

I've got that one as LP. Sounds terrific technically as wel as interpretatively

One of the best Tchaikovsky discs ever made has to be the performances of Francesca da Rimini and Hamlet on the Everest label with Stokowski conducting the Stadium Concerts SO, otherwise known as the New York Philharmonic. There are many fine performances of Francesca, but none as incandescent as this, and Hamlet is also superb.

Fatum is an early symphonic poem but, from the title alone, has more than hints of the Tchaik to come. I had it on an LP with Dorati and the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington DC. I used to rather like it's principal melody but haven't heard it for many years. Is it on CD?

I've got that set too and enjoy it. I cannot understand why The Tempest isn't better known and we never hear Hamlet enough either.

Mine too BBM - the organ bit is great, the beautiful start of the third movement - and the waterfall bit in the second movement. But as a whole it has everything, and my love of it all started for me with the Kletzki recording 50 years ago, but I also like the idiosyncracies of Ahronovitch and Abravanel, and more conventional Maazel and Svetlanov amongst many others - few versions are bad - it's almost the Alpine Symphony of my collection -39 recordings inc takes from radio!

I'm sad about Manfred. I was given a lovely CD taken from the radio of this but it has disappeared. Considering the state of my filing these days it's a miracle that no more are lost.

And regarding the Orchestral Suites, no 3 in G was frequently played years ago, sometimes just the attractive 'Theme and Variations'.
