    The orchestral music of Tchaikovsky

Well, I know that thbis is a pretty, much rather a broad spectrum of things, but I was looking for the rarer music that Tchaikovsky wrote for orchestra?

Indeed! I was thinking about the Orchestral Suites, salymap. I have Neeme jarvi conducting them and a rather nice collection on Chandos.

Withold war horses, eg his PC No.1 I have Argerich/Abbado, Leonskaja(spelling?0, at the top pf my head!

I was puzzled by the absence of The Tempest in the Brilliant Classics big box. One of my favourite Tchaikovsky works - I first heard it on one of those musically inspiring, but badly recorded Melodiya LPs.

Tempest is well done on the good value Litton BSO 6CD set ... they know about sea-storms down in Bournemouth.

Apart from Capriccio Italien, Souvenir de Florence and Romeo & Juliet, I don't think I know any others. Certainly nothing rare that I am aware of.

                      So much to learn...

Included in the Pletnev set I linked (?linked to? - both sound tooth-edgy!) above (Disc 1, track 4).

The Pletnev set of Tchaikovsky's symphonic poems on a DG Trio is a gem of an reissue, including a very fine Manfred Symphony as well. Francesca da Rimini is a work which frequently gets overlooked, but its a dramatic, blazing work. I last heard it (or at least part of it) last week when it concludes the John Cranko ballet version of Onegin.

Manfred Symphony has to be oe of my favourite works by Tchaik! I have Petrenko, Jansons. One of my favourite bits is when the organ comes in!

I was lucky enough to see The 3rd orchestral Suite at The Proms a couple of years ago, a great introduction to a terrific work. Mind you, I can't be doing with the Mozart one.
Its also surprising how many people don't know the lovely first symphony.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.
