I have one by Helen Ruttencutter and I seem to remember one by Michael Freedland that was so littered with errors I gave up on it.

Is there anything better?

There was also a short book in the mid-'70s by (IIRC) Edward Greenfield.

Previn has also written very well: I greatly enjoyed his marvellous autobiography, No Minor Thirds and his book of conversations with Antony Hopkins Music Face-to-Face. I seem to remember he curated a collection of interviews with orchestral Musicians, too, called IIRC Orchestra - which concluded on a very low note with an interview with a violinist who was leaving Orchestral playing because of the unpleasant and anti-Musical atmosphere she encountered.

When they could not believe the metronome marks printed in the Shostakovich trio score, Previn simply decided to call the composer, undeterred by scathing comments from his colleagues about the practicability of the idea.

Welll then I find it particularly hypocritical of him, in the famous M&W's Mr. Preview sketch, to scoff at Ernie's suggestion of ringing up Grieg to clear up a question. :-D

1947-1950 for RCA - I can't find any sign of a CD reissue of these three early albums.

The best performance by far IMO of that work. I actually think its quite fun! Love the Prokofiev Piano Concerto's set with Ashkenazy, Previn was a superb conductor when it came to accompanying soloists.

I haven't heard his recording, but I was there on the famous Prom occasion when Thomas Allen fell over as if poleaxed. I've never seen cellos move so fast !

Previn retained great presence of mind and went on conducting.

Well, he was of Scottish descent, so perhaps what you heard might have been correct and, if so, we needn't be surprised...

The Prommer who came out of the audience to take over Thomas Allen's part became my singing teacher a few years later, amiable and rather fun guy, good teacher too.
