Last night when I got home from an evening out with friends, I listened to a few CDs of American classical music; William Schuman’s violin concerto (Paul Zukofsky, Michael Tilson Thomas, Boston Symphony Orchestra DG); Charles Ives symphony #2 (Kenneth Schermerhorn, Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Naxos); Roy Harris symphony #9 (Kenneth Schermerhorn, Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Naxos); Elliott Carter Symphony #1 (Kenneth Schermerhorn, Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Naxos); and then Micheal Tillson Thomas' San Francisco recording of Appalachian Spring on RCA Red Label.
This morning I listened to the CD of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra’s version of Appalachian Spring on DG.
Thinking about the BaL of March 2014, Tilson Thomas was the full orchestra recommendation, Orpheus were praised for their chamber version, but it was the 1973 composer-conducted original chamber version that was the top recommendation. I don’t have a copy of this and I believe it’s only available on download. At £20.06 for the CD from Amazon, £14.44 for a FLAC download from Presto and £12.89 from Qobuz, it’s a bit of a rip (intended pun).
Does anyone have this recording and is it worth getting?
