Love both of those Concertos. It is beyond me why No 1 isn't a repertoire piece. Excellent performances too.

IIRC, you've mentioned this before, or am experiencing déjà vu?

Now there's a coincidence - those two Symphonies have featured prominently in my recent listening, too, together with the Harris Third. Good stuff.

The CD mentioned in post 1 has just found its way into the latest batch of Presto reissues, albeit at a price probably above what I paid for my copy many moons ago (even allowing for inflation).

Ruggles, Schuman & Piston: Orchestral Works. Deutsche Grammophon: 4298602. Buy Presto CD or download online. Paul Zukofsky (violin) Boston Symphony Orchestra, Michael Tilson Thomas

I read somewhere that MTT had made some cuts in the Piston, though.
Still quite regularly played here in Casa Pulcinella.

MTT conducts Piston 2 complete, according to the published score, which I've followed from MTT's recording several times.

Thanks, SC; I wonder what I've (mis)remembered then, and where I read it?

                          Is the Schwarz recording complete?

Good thought, Richard, but my brain has finally got into gear....
Bernstein's recording (though Sony or DG or both?) of Harris 3 is probably what I was thinking of!
                            I found this:

Yes Harris's 3rd is often performed with a number of very small cuts in the 'pastoral section' in total they only amount to little more than 30 seconds of music. These were introduced to enable the Symphony to fit conveniently on to 78rpm records when it was first recorded by Koussevitsky. Many conductors seem to take these as mandatory, but they are not and they are actually not marked in the score, I pencilled them in my score for information. Some conductors; Ormandy, Alsop, Mata, Leo Botstein, have recorded the work complete.

I rather like the concerto, although it does seem a bit " in your face " and " if you love Gerschwin you'll love this". Lots of fun, and very perky.

Quite like the symphony too, think it may grow on me.

Not so sure about Schuman symphony #7 at this stage though.

                                Corking CD in any event.
