Oh yes, lets play linguistic theory. Or better.....literary theory......
Can we start with post modernism?

Edit? isn't where people say something but mean something else called Politics?

Edit: returning to music, and with reference to the "writing a symphony" thread maybe one issue around classical music is that it is seen by too many young people as something that other people perform, and not as something in which they might participate at some point.

Knowing this IS useful if , as in this instance, you are a professional orchestral musician and you are about to work with people who don't habitually listen to the music that you spend most of your life playing and will use words that you might think that they are uninterested in the music you play.

I think use of the term "square" to disparage classical music lovers probably came in early on in the rock 'n' roll era, the mid-fifties, when young people for the first time discovered a form of music that was different from that of their parents. I do remember in the late 50s being under a lot of peer-group pressure to go with the crowd; fortunately, trad jazz was popular culture - all sorts of complex reasons why so, in contradistinction with the notion that "the new" was supplanting the old entirely - but a few like me made a transition from trad to "modern jazz", which was still (in 1963) associated with Mod culture and therefore , (within 2 years Mods gravitated to R&B). Apart from jazz my musical teenage revolt against the parental generation was helped by modern works in the school record library; I remember grabbing several boys and telling them: "You reckon classical music is square? come and listen to this", putting on Bartok's Music for Strings, Harp and Celesta, and watching their faces light up.

Perhaps the administration of orchestras could be transfered to local borough councils. This would make them more accountable to the wider community.
I hope that this was intended as a joke.

[QUOTE=Beef Oven;253385]Vibrato, bowing issues and variation of the original orchestration could be left to the orchestra.

                How generous of you.

Yes, but it back-fired. It came across as serious, and I had to run with it for a while. Luckily the thread changed direction and I sloped off.

Parliamentary democracy is neither strange nor a fantasy.
