    The unknown knowns

No, nothing to do with Donald Rumsfeld. I was listening to Essential Classics this morning and Sarah Walker played Prokofiev's Classical Symphony. If anyone had asked me If I'd heard it before I would probably have said 'no', but the opening was instantly familiar, so I must have heard it, & probably more than once.

I would be very surprised if a regular contributor to these boards had not heard it before.

One of those pieces which I have heard many times before but if I turn on in the middle as this time can never quite remember what it is.

Sorry, Mr GG, I've got it now. Although what he has to do with music, I have no idea:-

Did you ever watch The Flaxton Boys, Flossie; an ITV kid's series from the end of the '60s/ early '70s? That was the theme tune.

I was picking a friend up to go to the gym this morning and turned on the radio as it was playing. I told him we were listening to Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla

The Dear Leader and his team better not find out that FoR3 members don't recognise the regular overplayed warhorses or they'll use it as an excuse to play them even more until we' can name that tune in one'.

They seem to be in a real hurry to play as many warhorses as they can this year. The year is only 10 and a half days only and 2/3rds of entries in my 'warhorse list' have been filled already, some more than once!

Is "knowing" the same as "naming" ?

                              ... but seriously ...

Not necessarily (and isn't this one of the central ideas of Lohengrin?) - many of us will have experienced the sensation of following a piece, knowing exactly what's coming next, but totally unable to recollect the title or composer.
