... thankfully, the Piano doesn't literally turn to gold when he touches it: just think of the poor platform shifters!

I don't like Aimard's playing - cold to my ears . Barenboim/Barbirolli is indeed another classic combination in these concertos.

I think I have done Arrau and Haitink a disservice - on CD it sounds a lot more exciting than my old cassette - cracking performances by Haitink of the Tragic and Academic Festival Overtures too .

well I appreciate your professional concern, Cals, but the OB don't really bother about that old one do they?

mind you, if the show goes up north, and Edgeleyrob gets to hear about it........

Might buy the record and frame the cover.

She's not known as the Gallic powerhouse for nothing. Last year I heard her play No. 1 with the CBSO/Nelsons. It was a phenomenal performance, muscular and intensely lyrical by turns, delivered with astounding clarity and a myriad of tone colours on a glorious Fabbrini Steinway. Mindblowing.

She's so spontaneous (I think it was Jurowski who said if you don't watch her all the time she'll be gone) that I know the CD would spoil the memory. I heard Paul Lewis play No. 1 last month and as so often with him, it was so correct, admirable and bloody dull.

Helene G & Andris N aren't coming to London to flog CDs. They're booked for his Brahms cycle. She's been travelling with these concertos in her bag for over a year, the VPO booked them for Vienna and a tour to Japan. It's a wonderful partnership; Andris is brilliant and encouraging with soloists and very quick thinking. Give me the concert over the CD anytime.

I shan't come to London but they're bringing No. 2 to Oxford and we already have our tickets!

Edit Just noticed Caliban that you 've missed No. 2 which should be in Jan '14. Nelsons is doing 4 concerts.

Heard her do LvB No 4 under Salonen a few years ago - very good though an elderly audience member collapsed in the choir seats at the transition to the Finale, so Salonen stopped the concert and had to ask if there was a doctor in the house...
