A New Year List of favourites, symphonies 1 to 9

As Anton loves lists I thought this might work...

State your favourite Symphonies from one to nine. They must all be by different composers and that's about it.One for each number and no cheating...........

    Best wishes to all.

Sticky choice for No. 9 as I'm not that keen on Mahler, so it's 12 minutes worth of Haydn in C major. What a pity we were not asked to go up to 104!

No on second thought it has to be Shosters.
      1) Brahms
      2) Borodin
      3) Nielsen
      4( Vaughan Williams
      5) Schubert
      8) Sibelius
      7) Beethoven
      8) Dvorak
      9) Shostakovich

You heard the 8th before it was destroyed? If you could notate it it could make you a very rich man.

Nobody's named their actual favourite symphonies - salymap's requirements make the job easier for me!

Not in any particular order of personal merit then:

            Gerhardt 1
            Henze 7
            Mahler 10
            Borodin 2
            Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony
            Bax 6
            Honegger 4
            Koechlin 2
            Stravinsky Symphony in Three Movements

                Double dose of RVW?

                OK - I see it's been changed. Stravinsky's don't have numbers! Maybe that's allowed.

wasn't it supposed to be one 1st, one second, one third etc?

                    Hmmm , maybe.

I can't comply then, because I like 'em all equally, for different things they offer in each case.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                            39. Mozart

More difficult task that I first thought as many composer run out after 4 or 5 and there are few 9ths I like so I cheated! - would have considered Schubert or Dvorak but Schubert 5 and Dvorak 8 must haves. With restrictions no room there for Brahms 2, Rachmaninov 2 and Beethoven 3. Also Saly I think for a 10th we should add an unnumbered symphony Berlioz Fantastique would be mine!

I'd be interested in suffolk coastal's list!
