It has already been mentioned here in passing that The Grim Reaper has been working overtime of late in culling musicians; in the past few months, indeed, he (is it a he?) has taken from us, among others, Marvin Hamlisch, Jacques Barzun, Hans Werner Henze, Elliott Carter, Simeon ten Holt, Ian Parrott, Ravi Shankar, Anthony di Bonaventura, Philip Ledger, Jonathan Harvey, Dave Brubeck, Lisa della Casa, Galina Vishnevskaya, Charles Rosen, Otto Ketting and Victor Merzhanov, an already horrendous list now augmented just two days ago by the departure of Richard Rodney Bennett, albeit not on the Orient Express. There's the rest of today and five more clear days left of this year; might there be a chance that we all be spared yet more musical demises?

The last 12 years have seen a terrible toll on jazz musicians as well: Dave Brubeck (already mentioned), Don Tchicai, Mike Brecker, Joe Zawinul; and Derek Bailey, Elton Dean, Paul Rutherford, Graham Collier, Ian Carr, Jeff Clyne, Lol Coxhill, Michael Garrick - just to mention those we've lost here who come to mind.
We are lucky to have heard their music, maybe bought their records, and in my case been honoured to have known them all.

No signs of it letting up, apparently, with the death of San Francisco Symphony principal oboe William Bennett yesterday morning, aged 56, following a sudden cerebral hemorrhage last Saturday while performing Richard Strauss' Oboe Concerto:
This was Joshua Kosman's brief article on that Sat. night performance when it happened:
Poignantly in retrospect, this is the review of that program from the concert 2 days before, Thursday night:
