    Juke box? Player piano?

Mentioned in the Interiors section of the Times today, Steinway are about to market some grand pianos with a "free" iPad. A sort of piano juke box for £77+k.

Might be useful in a jam session.

... to bring a sense of proportion - it's not the top of their ten recommendations for must-have items.

          Which are, in order -

          1. Mirror TVs.
          2. Wooden baths
          3. Fridges for cosmetics
          4. Splashback walls
          5. Stealth kitchens
          6. Personalized door handles
          7. Bed headboard walls
          8. Self-playing pianos
          9. Large squidgy ottomans
          10. Tom Ford books

Roll on the XVI Tchaikovsky International Competition (Piano Section) - just Steinway Spirio pianos. Live pianists surplus to requirements.

Would doubtless attract Apple's core followers.

After reading this last night, the Dohnanyi has been going through my head all day. I've just got in and tried to find the music - but it's not in its logical place. What a wonderful piece, especially the ultra-Romantic middle section with the soaring triplets.

Your comment about playing a Bosendorfer reminded me of an incident in the late 60s when I did not show myself at my best. I went into Morley's in Lewisham to order some piano music. The assistant must have thought it was quite an impressive piece for a mere lad to be buying, so judged that I had some ability on the piano. (I can't remember what piece it was, but buying the music is vastly different from being able to play it.)

As I was leaving he proudly said that they had recently begun to stock Bosendorfers and asked if I would like to try one. To my shame I had never heard of them, but went and played something, with no sense that I was being given the chance to do something special. It was only when I told my piano teacher that I realised what I'd been playing.

Mine's an 1896 model C, fully refurbished over the past few years so nicely that it should long outlive me...

That's exactly what the Restoration Manager said when mine was returned to me. I was shocked at the time, but it's true.

The Bosendorfer's extra notes must be worth shouting about. Note the change of colour.

A model C, eh? Brilliant, though quite rare in the UK.
