    Stephen Gray R.I.P

I knew Stephen Gray very well when we were fellow members of the Orchestral Employers Association in the late 1960s.

Known to us all as "Noddy" he was a gentle man, never argumentative and contributed much to discussion on the situation (and plights) of the provincial symphony orchestras.

Liverpool in particular owes him a great debt of gratitude.
Stephen Gray, who has died aged 89, was co-founder of the Chelsea Opera Group, the company that gave a young Colin Davis his first break as a conductor. Gray later enjoyed a 23-year career as general manager of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, working with five principal conductors.

Yes, I was very sad when I read he had died. I never knew him, but he was important to the RLPO for a long time.

Thanks for that HS. I never knew him but a musician friend did, and I certainly remember when Colin Davis started with the Chelsea Opera Group all those years ago.
Stephen Gray was not only a musician but gave a helping hand to so many conductors and orchestras.
      RIP
