    Lisa Della Casa RIP

Sad news - Lisa Della Casa has just died in her 94th year - report (in German) on the Vienna State Opera website:

One of the few singers I really like - and her Strauss Last Songs are among my favourites.
    RIP Lisa della Casa

Oh yes, Roehre. And her Arabella. Both unsurpassed.

One of my very favourite singers and with such a distinctive voice.

What a terrible year this is for the loss of so many great artists from the world of music.

        RIP.

Couldn't put it better myself. And wonderful in 'Capriccio'

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

This was one of the first classical LPs which I bought as a student aged about 20 when it appeared. It became a very much loved and often played favourite. The CD transfer will certainly get another play today.

I see the recording I had on cassette has appeared on Naxos now. Magical. It's gone in my basket!

I 'got to know' RStrauss' Four Last Songs through the Schwarzkopf/Szell recording which I loved. Then someone pointed me at the Schwarzkopf/Ackerman set & a new love grew. Then I heard della Casa and at first I thought 'too fast, surely' and then I realised that I had fortunately 'learned' this wonderful group of songs saving the best til last.

She was lovely as the Countess in that historic and still delightful Figaro with Erich Kleiber and the VPO.

                          - a lovely voice; a pity there aren't more recordings, but what there is (as this Thread has shown) is unique. RIP and thanks.

That Strauss Four Last Songs from 1953 with Karl Böhm amd the VPO is one of the discs reserved for that desert island. Magical.

No less magical is the Mahler 4 with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago SO from 1958 in what is a truly inspired disc that hasn't had it's due.

I played both of these tonight.

Sad news indeed but she had a very good innings .

I also got to know the Four Last Songs through the famous Schwarzkopf/Szell record and was never overly taken with it . Then one morning home from university I had Radio 3 on and the most wonderful voice singing these songs at a flowing tempo came on . I was transfixed and although I was due to go out had to listen to the end - to find it was the Lisa della Casa/Bohm recording .

It has been one of my two favourites ( together with that other great Strauss soprano who died this year Sena Jurinac) ever since and she was a great singer of other repertoire too. I treasure a Frauenliebe und Leben too as well as that Figaro .

Probably , one of the purest most beautiful soprano voices there has ever been

RIP to an artist who gave so much pleasure
