Victoria Wood has written a play about the Hatto saga, it's on BBC 1 on Sunday 23rd She's had to be a bit careful, because some of the characters are still very much alive.
Full details in next week's Radio Times.

I'd nominate Sir Adrian Boult conducting Ravel's 'Daphnis & Chloƫ'

Cali - I've had this on my Amazon list for a while - an interesting juxtaposition of works on the CD - Boult and Ravel are not the first combination you'd think of!

I've never thought of Andre as brash - he is one of the most perceptive and versatile musicians still around.

You get a rather good Sibelius symphony no 7 too, hardly standard Boult fare - it's a cracking CD from a master of his craft

          Good price too

Indeed; and Andreas Ludwig Prewin lived his first nine years in Berlin before becoming American.

But I think Sir Velcro's point is that "a brash American" was the perception of the British critical fraternity before the appearance of his RVW cycle?

Another American that spent some time on British podiums with mixed reactions was also a good RVW conductor - one Leonard Slatkin!

Sir Georg Solti isn't the first name one thinks of in connection with Handel's Messiah but his 1987 recording is a real winner. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chorus are simply astonishing and lift this recording into a class of it's own.
