LSO and Berkeley on Radio 4

There were two excellent music-related programmes on Radio 4 today (Tuesday).

The first, Rebuilding the LSO, I found truly fascinating. All about the 'democratic' nature of the orchestra, its reputation for feisty members, its Previn era, and its financial ups and downs. Did any of our ex- or current pro players hear it?
Matthew Bannister tells the story of the London Symphony Orchestra from the 1980s to now.

The second, It's My Story - Music and Silence* was about Michael Berkeley's deafness; how it was brought on by a mere cold, how truly devastating it can be for a musician and how one can learn to live with it.

There was also an interesting 15 minute interview with Ashkenazy in "One to One" at 09:30 on R4 today.

R4 must be making a bid to be 'the music channel'. At 11.30 today we had, "The Physicist's Guide to the Orchestra" which was an attempt to explain the science behind the woodwind, brass, strings and percussion. Aesthetics came into it too.

R4's budget is being effectively ring-fenced. R3 (which last year spent less than half what R4 spent on content - £37.8m v. £88.1m) has had to cut back on 'music talks'. Set to continue until 2016/17 (R3 £40.7m or -4%, R4 £99.5m -0%).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Thanks for the heads-up from me too ardcarp. I listened to the Michael B programme with interest as I have a similar hearing loss which has become much worse lately. Can't get to Harley Street though and our local hospital has discontinued this department.

I must catch the LSO programme before it disappears.
