I have all three of those (plus a DVD of a 1978 Prom with the BBCSO at which I was present) and for my money the best of the bunch is the version with the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra on Russian Disc recorded in 1981.

I don't think you will be disappointed. The sound on the Bolshoi CD is far better than the usual Soviet sonics and it's a typically grippng performance from Rozhdestvensky. This symphony clearly means a lot to him. He chose it for his debut concert as chief conductor of the BBCSO at the 1978 Proms referred to above.

I was just about to pass on similar information, but a glitch stymied me. Now of course I'll have to seek out the Bolshoi and Philharmonia versions. Don't expect the finest possible sound on the USSR SO version, but it's gripping. My Olympia pressing includes an upfront but very entertaining performance of the 1st Jazz Suite

I remember that concert being programmed, I think, and toyed with the idea of going - DSCH4 was already a puzzle to me, and I wanted to try and crack it. Didn't go though... Lucky you!!
