Is it really? Whose? And, while we're about it, when and where did Henry James give - or even lend his style to - tax advice? And did he ever give any to Shostakovich? Just curious! I have so much to learn about so many things...
Still you can learn stuff on here..like how to accumulate a vast CD collection with almost no effort, for instance!
Its a good place to learn, even if one gets the odd telling off !!

I bought the Raiskin download last December at the same price so you should be ok. It is an excellent performance and a steal at the price.

I have it now! In fact I had some vouchers on my account so it cost me a princely £1.26

Ah, yes - got it now! Many thanks for this reminder. It does indeed seem that some oak trees have grown from some little acorns over there. Sorry to have seemed a little dense (not for the first time, I'm sure!)...

By the way, I took your advice...

Thanks Petrushka. Bolshoi performance duly Amazon Marketplaced (and a suspiciously cheap "pre-owned" copy of the USSR Symphony performance as well while I was at it). He (GR) still conducting the symphony - in Paris last month with the Orchestre de Paris which, alas, doesn't seem to have been on France Musique.

I don't think you will be disappointed. The sound on the Bolshoi CD is far better than the usual Soviet sonics and it's a typically grippng performance from Rozhdestvensky. This symphony clearly means a lot to him. He chose it for his debut concert as chief conductor of the BBCSO at the 1978 Proms referred to above.

I was just about to pass on similar information, but a glitch stymied me. Now of course I'll have to seek out the Bolshoi and Philharmonia versions. Don't expect the finest possible sound on the USSR SO version, but it's gripping. My Olympia pressing includes an upfront but very entertaining performance of the 1st Jazz Suite

My portal to this work, was rather a fruitful one. As it was, it was when haoitoink was recordi9ng his great Shostakopviochcycle. i saw this l;ve at the RFH! Electricity was live in the audience that night,! It was avery special evening.Alfred Brendel played LvB's PC No.4 in the first half.

Bbm, I love you and I want to have your babies!!!

I remember that concert being programmed, I think, and toyed with the idea of going - DSCH4 was already a puzzle to me, and I wanted to try and crack it. Didn't go though... Lucky you!!

Love the way Rumpole's threads barely put a foot on the beaten track.........................

                          Back (I think) on topic - --

Paul Simon - 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - IMHO sheer unmitigated c**p - if I recall was a number one in the US - says it all

Post modern irony, anton, or the wrong thread? Our Bbm tributes at least arise from his recollection of a DSCH concert...

The link between Paul Simon and Shostakovich 4 is certainly not immediately apparent.

Did you mean to post on the 'dodgy CD' thread?

EDIT: maybe it's because it's the 'problem piece' by Mr Simon, the rest of whose oeuvre you rate highly?
