I find one of the best things about the Radio 3 Forum is that it reminds me of works I haven't listened to for years. Others like Dvorak 5 (Ferney is especially eloquent) but I place it low in my list. Well, truth is that I haven't heard it for - perhaps - 30 years. So I listened to it. And it's lovely.

I don't know how this affects my list, but I don't care very much: I really enjoyed it, so 'thank you' everyone.

Maybe I should listen to 5 and 6 again. I just feel that the mid period is more boomy than pastoral per se.

I prefer numbers 7-9 and of the first half a dozen number 3. With hindsight, I'd probably place no. 1 last.

Maybe 5 and 6 more Brahmsian, but none the worse for that - first Sejna, then Kertesz attracted me to these early doors, mid sixties.

Yes, possibly, although I do recall hearing that many found Brahms boring and consequently that was when I decided I liked Brahms 3 and 4.

Dvorak 3 is lyrical which is why it appeals to me. I like the subtlety in 7 with which 3 has been paired on CD. 7 is marginally above 8 which to my mind is the culmination of 4-6 and more coherent in colour/structure but that's just how I hear them. I'm sure technically it isn't right and, taking Pab's cure, it is about preference, not objective assessment.

How was it compiled? What were listeners asked for?

Probably a give us your top five and we'll give you a top 100 - hardly sound statistically!

Exactly. That's why things like that are completely pointless and meaningless.

After hearing the Ninth in concert twice this year I am rather renewed in my affection for it . I was thinking last night what an impact it must have made at its Carnegie Hall and European premieres.

Listening to the BPO/Kubelik this morning I am reinforced in my view that the performance I heard last night was a bit unbalanced but far from being over exposed to it I think I might well listen to some more performances over the next few days.

Got that one - jolly good it is too though his recording of the Eighth is better .

The double set was waiting for me yesterday after returning from a dispiriting visit to the Préfecture in Nice (queuing for two and three quarter hours to get in; a bit of a rammy when one got inside to submit a dossier of various justicatifs - yet another by-product of the bloody B word) and listening to the 8th quite lifted my mood (yet another excellent Michael Dutton remastering). The Scherzo Capriccioso likewise. Many thanks for the recommendation, Vints and Barbs.

I listen to the 'New World' very occasionally, but I'm much more likely to insert my favourite Dvorak symphony - the 5th - into my CD player.
I don't know how many people know that the lad pushing his bike up Gold Hill was the 3rd choice - the 1st boy refused to have his hair cut in the required style and it transpired that the 2nd couldn't ride a bike. If you're ever in the area, there's a lovely little museum just off the top of the hill.

When I were a lad, the 5th was the New World.
