Sad news indeed. It seemed that he'd go on for ever.

Strange to feel so sad after the death of someone so creatively fecund, at 104! But that's how it feels. What pleasure he gave...

Many favourites - Concerto for Orchestra, Piano Concerto, Clarinet Concerto, Symphonia (especially the tenebroso), and the Quartets, especially No.3 with its astounding interlocking duos! (The Juilliard set came with a special chart to help you follow it, or at least to get lost more enjoyably). And those late Concertos, Asko & Boston, mini-concertos for orchestra. Some catalogue.

That is terrible news. We all know we must all die, but his great age and uncompromising musical stance did give me a forlorn and illusory hope that I might not. I need another lifetime to appreciate his music, but how I wish he was still here to deliver those too difficult sounds. I will keep trying, it is good to be challenged by those who show a path.

And for me his very underrated (IMO) piano sonata... and not to forget that wonderful cello sonata either.

A sad loss indeed

I'm still struggling to believe this very sad news, rather as Busoni did when he heard of the death of Scriabin and refused to believe it until he'd heard it from several sources. An astonishingly rich creative life and an inspiration to us all.

I thought he was going to go on for ever, very sad indeed. I have tremendous admiration for this giant of contemporary music. To now have lost two giant in a couple of weeks is extremely saddening.

A tremendous loss; Carter's powers defied the passing of time - those fresh, "youthful" masterpieces of his last fifteen years! Great, inspirational Music; great, inspirational human being.
