Posted this in a separate forum but I thought Britten 100 fans might find this an appealing 3 day festival. Very tempting programmes:

Kings Place is a hub for music, art, dialogue and food in London’s Kings Cross. Come and experience two world-class concert halls, galleries, a bar/café, waterside restaurant and award winning conference and events facilities - all under one roof.

I've got that one, Mr GG - should probably have bought the DVDs separately as I had two of them already, but the box set is well presented witha very good booklet, and when it first came out I didn't know they would be available separately. Britten and his Festival is really fascinating.

Brilliant, thanks Mary! And now my Britten obsession can go into hyperdrive!

It will be interesting to see what Richard Jones does with Gloriana at the ROH. (I loved that clip of Pappano on the centenary site!) I'm not involved (alas!) but I hear snippets about the production. It's a cracking piece, glorious score and Britten's dramatic pacing is as sharp as anywhere else in his output. "Ha-a-appy ..."

I was surprised to see that the website listed the Scottish Chamber Orchestra doing Gloriana - when I checked their site I found that it was just the four courtly dances.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland & the BBCSSO are both doing the Sinfonia da Requiem about a month & a half apart.

I've just bought a Britten 50p coin from the Royal Mint. Heaven knows what I'll do with it, but I wanted it, and since I just about never see a new coin in circulation I've bought the cheapest presentation version (£8). In any case, it isn't in circulation yet. Extravagant people, or those who think it might be an investment, can get it in 22 carat gold for £800!

Blimey. I don't feel so guilty about splashing out on the 'Complete Works' CD set now!

Did anyone happen to record Britten conducting the Hebrides Overture (a live recording I believe from the festival one year) broadcast during the centenary weekend? I thought it quite remarkable how a very familiar work could sound so 'new'. Lots of detail, inner parts and harmony I'd never before noticed, and structurally brilliant.

Btw, 39 years ago today, Ben passed away. At the time, I saw it on the evening news. Don't know if it was on the actual day.

Do others have a memory of that day?
