Thanks for that. What an interesting choice of entry soundtrack! They could have opted for something obvious, like a Sea Interlude or YPGO. Could this be the year when Gloriana is reappraised?

A database of 1157 events worldwide - amazing.

Does anyone (Mary?) know the date of the publication of the last volume of letters? There's a link to it, but no precise date. (Sorry, I've found it now - 15 November.)

Hello there - and thanks for the link Mary.

Looking forward to the centenary and all it promises.

One intriguing and enticing prospect that I came across the other day.

The Berlin Philharmonic is doing this concert next June

          Sat, 15 Jun 2013 8 p.m. Europe/Berlin

          Berliner Philharmoniker
          Sir Simon Rattle

Emily Magee, John Mark Ainsley, Matthias Goerne, Rundfunkchor Berlin

          Benjamin Brittten
          War Requiem

Emily Magee Soprano, John Mark Ainsley Tenor, Matthias Goerne Baritone, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Simon Halsey Chorus Master, Knaben des Staats- und Domchors Berlin, Kai-Uwe Jirka Chorus Master

Is it possible - that they may be performing this later on at The Proms? Fingers crossed :-)

          Best Wishes,

          Tevot

The musical world is gearing up to celebrate Benjamin Britten's centenary, with more than 1,500 events planned so far

…include the issue of a commemorative 50p coin – the first honouring a British composer

Couldn’t it have been at least ten-pound note ?

In terms of value: yes, but in terms of longevity: please on a 50p coin, as those will be in circulation much longer than any note of what denomination whatever.

My thoughts exactly. Not that anyone ever looks at what's on coins, as far as I know.

And what about stamps - many musicians have been thus honoured ?

There have been rumours about a stamp, but there doesn't seem to be anything official about it.

Thanks, mercs: I think this is the 50th anniversary performance that the BBC conspicuously failed to record/broadcast (probably some important baking competition needing the airspace!) - superb performance, if so.

DVD and Blueray to be released on 1 October. Mine's on order.

Indeed. I shopped around for the DVD recording - CBSO/Nelsons - and the best deal was £12 99, post free, from Sainsbury's Entertainment.

But it used a girls' choir, which isn't what Britten asked for. Otherwise, I agree it was very good.
