Haydn Wood - composer and conductor

With a name like that, perhaps he felt pressured into pursuing a music career. But it is his light music that is remembered nowadays, though even this is becoming a distant memory. Even Roses from Picardy is rarely heard today.

A Yorkshireman (from Slaithwaite) he later studied with Stanford at the RCM.

One work worth hearing is Mannin Veen, inspired by his residence on the Isle of Man.

Mannin veen = 'dear(beloved tho today the financial meaning might also be appropriate!) Isle of Man' - his brother was Harry Wood who ran the music at one of the large dance halls - see www.manxnotebook.com/exans/prt_1927.htm
