He had a very long radio and television career and was very much part of my childhood

Oh that's sad although 89 isn't bad. As you say ams, part of our youth gone. A good all round entertainer

    RIP

And mine, though he was never a favourite (I won't put it more strongly than that at this time.)

I might have mis-remembered, but didn't he also take some 'straight' film roles? To Sir, with love?

              Er, Sidney Poitier....

You might be thinking of 'A Cry from the Streets' which Max starred in.

Funnily enough, although my mum didn't like him especially (neither did I...), I still hear her saying "In Gilllygillyotsanfeckincatsanelanboagan by the sea"... Is that right?

Or perhaps "Spare the Rod" (1961), compared as the British "Blackboard Jungle", and based on Michael Croft''s popular novel. Croft was also director of the National Youth Theatre. The film starred Max Bygraves, Geoffrey Keen and Donald Pleasance.

Sorry, it's Spare the Rod, as Stanley has reminded me. (Well, I got the setting right!)

not sure if the part highlighted was in the original song! but it was very popular with my partner's children, as was 'You're a pink toothbrush ..., for in-car entertainment.

I found this set of lyrics. Brings back memories:

As recorded by MAX BYGRAVES & CHILDREN'S CHORUS:

                            (SPOKEN: Ah, Good Morning, kidlets.
I'm going to tell you a story in song about
what happened in Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen
                            Bogen By The Sea.)

                            There’s a tiny house (There's a tiny house)
By a tiny stream (By a tiny stream)
Where a lovely lass (Where a lovely lass)
Had a lovely dream (Had a lovely dream)
And her dream came true (And her dream came true)
                            Quite unexpectedly
In Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea

She was out one day (She was out one day)
Where the tulips grow (Where the tulips grow)
When a handsome lad (When a handsome lad)
Stopped to say hello (Stopped to say hello)
And before she knew (And before she knew)
                            He kissed her tenderly
In Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea

The happy pair were married one Sunday afternoon
They left the church and ran away to spend their honeymoon

In a tiny house (In a tiny house)
By a tiny stream (By a tiny stream)
Where the lovely lass (Where the lovely lass)
Had a lovely dream (Had a lovely dream)
And the last I heard (And the last I heard)
                            They still live happily

In Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea

So now you've heard the story of how it all begun
(I think I'd like to go there)
                            That's a good idea, Son!

Sing it very soft (Sing it very soft)
                            Pianissimo (Pianissimo)
Like a little bird (Like a little bird)

                            Now sing it merrily
It's Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea
