Dear Marthe, thank you very much for your post, which I found quite moving. My visits to NH were a mixed pleasure and I was soothed by Morning Pro Musica. I now recall the Respighi too. You have closed a circle for me with this information. I like the idea of 'mom music'. What a shame it was not replaced.

My pleasure, kb! I'm glad we had that common experience of listening to Morning Pro Musica. It was such a part of our life that we felt truly bereft when Robert J. was no longer there. I've heard Beethoven 5 and Shostakovich 5 too many times to ever care if there's a worldwide ban slapped on them!

It's also annoying when works are ascribed as the greatest of their kind for that country/, for example Copland's Third Symphony, when more than 50% of that repertoire is scarcely in the public domain.

They dont get played on radio 3 as much as Debussy La Mer or Stravinsky Firebird Suite!

P.S. Stravinsky okay. But they could swop that work for Requiem Canticles, or something else different. Stravinsky wrote hundreds of works!

I found there was a quite long article on Robert J on Wikipedia, and although YouTube doesn't boast a clip of Morning Pro Musica, his voice can be heard narrating a disc about the Loon here:

I enjoyed hearing his voice. Interestingly, perhaps for R3 listeners, he has quite a deep voice. I don't remember Cormac Rigby's voice well but Peter Barker, for many years a Radio 3 continuity announcer, had a sonorous voice. Peter Donaldson on Radio Four has this - it adds gravitas to a broadcaster.

The amount of Stravinsky broadcast so far this year on R3 has taken a bit of a nose dive. Certainly the more demanding Stravinsky works rarely get much of a look in these days. Having now mentioned this I expect there may be a sudden surge in Stravinsky on R3 in the next couple of months, it is strange how often this happens, me thinks someone from R3 does indeed closely monitor these Boards!

kernelbogey, thank you very much for the youtube clip of Robert J. and the loons! How wonderful to RJL's voice again! The loons are a treat too. I remember seeing and hearing loons while I was visiting friends in Maine. If you get up early enough you can see them dance in the water. Quite magical.

Scottish composers and the annoying ones

Has Scotland ever produced a truly notable composer, ahinton?

I'm told Robert Carver is one but I'm not really 'into' early music, tbh. As for the modern day, MacMillan is approachable for sure but whether his music will stand the test of time only time will tell.

I apologise, people, for not keeping up. Before I chip in my tuppence worth on the topic of the thread, one or two suggestions for quite good Scottish composers (a few pages back). How about Cecil Coles, Sir John Blackwood McEwen and that other one, wossisname? Oh yes, Hamish MacCunn.

Annoying ones:-

• Whatever Nigel Kennedy is playing at the moment.
• Anything by Einaudi.
• Khachaturian's adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia - that's One Din we could do without.
• And I wish somebody would shoot that b***** lark of Vaughan Williams.

Well they annoy me anyway. Now, where did I put my bagpipes?

Ah THAT adagio... when Onedin Line came on I would quickly leave the room, and the TV, to my parents...

Result is, I hardly heard more than the first few bars; if I hear it now I can easily start sobbing, last time I played it deliberately I was a tear-stained wreck by the end!

Stuff played when waiting on phone.

Most annoying is stuff one has to listen to, for instance waiting on a phone call. Eine Kleine comes top of the list, followed closely by the 4 Seasons and Brandenburg 3.
The glutinous "Albinoni" Adagio is quite nauseating, but has a sort of clinging appeal, like an over rich pudding.

What a neurotic lot you are!

Ignore it. The ear has a remarkable capacity for hearing only that which is of interest - in a crowded restaurant, for instant.

The fact that there is music coming over the handset at least reassures you that you have not lost the line.
