Caliban. Thanks for the analysis on my favourite Shoshtakovich symphony!

I now realise the 12 notes to mvt 3 at the start, sounds so obvious now. But Im still not sure where this mvt 1 2nd subject 12 note theme is. Is it the fanfare? But that starts with repeated notes?

P.S. Ironic talking about one of the best symphonys in the last half of the 20th century on an annoying pieces of music thread!

Hang on. Its the jumpy tune before the William Tell Quotation! I think.

Yup! That's one of its appearances... I'm whistling it now, but that doesn't help you! If you follow my reference, another appearance is shown in one of the musical illustrations in that analysis, at (b) in Example 15...

I agree with all your comments about this fantastic piece of music, hearing the first movement of which was my personal epiphany at the age of 15 as far as orchestral / classical music is concerned!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes. It starts with repeated notes beforehand then the 12 notes ending with a repeated note. Then high woodwind. then the theme is played again.

            I dislike
            Everything by Bruckner.
Peter Grimes and almost everything thereafter by Britten.
            Everything by Peter Maxwell Davies.

You must already know what they're playing. Popular pieces by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven to name but a few. Nothing outlandish, challenging or dissonant. Certainly nothing by Mahler, Bruckner, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Medtner, Scriabin etc. etc. etc. The same old, same old.
However I did turn on the radio the other morning and had to check the radio's station ident as I thought that it was on Classic FM but no, it was on R3. What has happened there. My God what a travesty this station has become for a large part of the day, now,

Yes, on Classic FM it was the usual "Mozart Gems" but they did play symphony no.25 which I like.
Anyway, it was either Classic FM or complete silence.

                    Anything but Elgar! :

I mean. Is Radio 3 sponsered by Elgar, Wagner and Wigmore Hall or wot?

I often opt for silence as there is nothing wrong with that state. Why do so many people require noise all the time?

Well over here we have something called "Tracks to Relax" on the local FM commercial classical station. I leave the playlist to your imagination! There is also the "Mozart Block at Nine O'Clock" in the morning! Truly wall paper, but better than nothing.

That suite perhaps but why stop there with Profofiev's work? Also included could be perhaps 50% of Shostakovich's output which is meaningless, trite nonsense as well.

What exactly do you mean by "meaningless" ?

Hi Marthe: back in the eighties, I used to visit New Haven, Conn for business and used to wake myself with the hotel clock radio tuned to a local public broadcasting station - of course I now don't remember its name. There was an agreeably voiced presenter who introduced classical music items from 7 am with minimal words. What I most remember though is that the programme started with recorded birdsong. Do such stations and programmes still exist in the States?
