The 3rd Symphony is rather special.

Don't you mean "that pas-de-deux and that bit of Gayene" (or "that dance and that bit of Spartacus")?

Beware, it is not for those of a nervous disposition.

Just noticed, that Stokowski box now costs what I got both it and the Rubenstein box fro the same series for a couple of years ago.

No Schnittke partisans here? Has his star fallen? There had been a fair number of releases of his work for a while but I don’t recall anything recent.

I always found there to be a strong fin de siècle feel about his music. The wrong fin de siècle.

I’ve never come to terms with Vain/Weinberg. Most of his works don’t seem to stick in the consciousness a la DSCH...

A huge fan here, especially of the symphonies (apart from No.1 perhaps, the sort of musical joke you can only enjoy once, really...).... No.5 is one of my musical icons. No.2 has an obvious appeal for a devoted Brucknerian..!

I wasn't sure what to make of this reawakened thread.... I would have said: Schnittke, and Gubaidulina.....
And surely Tchaikovsky comes before all of them.....

What, Boris? He's the only Tchaikovsky I can think of who might be considered a Soviet composer, but the 'third great'? Hardly.

I regret missing a performance of No 1 a couple of years ago. I wonder how hearing this live might affect ones view of it ?Whether for the better or not, I would expect a more than usually strong response to a live performance.

"Tchaikovsy comes before all of them"......thinking musical tradition not geopolitics.... (but needed a tongue-in-cheek emoticon I guess....apologies..)
