I mentioned the many Vaughan Williams symphonies uploads on You Tube earlier and have a question. I wonder how the BBC feels about the uploads of its televised concerts by all and sundry, ie: the ones not put there by the BBC itself. For example, several complete symphonies from Andrew Manze's 2012 RVW cycle have been uploaded by different people and all have received many thousands of "views." You Tube uploaders are informed at the start that they must have permission to do the uploading or take the risk of a copyright strike. I wonder if the BBC isn't really bothered about copyright because, as someone in a record company tells me, it's all good "free publicity". In other words, many hundreds of You Tube viewers may see these Proms uploads, observe the informality of the classical music-making at the Albert Hall, rush to buy tickets for the up-coming season, and thus bring in some welcome income. Does that theory sound about right? :)
