For Vaughan Williams aficionados, there are now three "first performances" of RVW's 9th Symphony on YouTube ...

The Egarr was recorded off the internet, so the sound isn't very good. However, YouTube is the only place you're likely to hear these performances, as "historic recordings" apparently no longer find their way onto Radio 3.

Sir Adrian’ s recording on Everest was I think the first available commercial recording!

^^^ I was also trying to find on YouTube the Portuguese Premiere of RVW9, given on 20 December 1958 by the National Symphony Orchestra of Portugal, conductor Pedro de Freitas Branco. However, all I could come across was "The Wasps" Overture, in which the enthusiasm displayed by the orchestra was not matched by any finesse in the playing!
Boult did indeed make the first commercial recording but when Stokowski's 'live' concert performance was issued on Cala, the critics were unanimous in their praise. Michael Kennedy wrote that "the first movement has never sounded so monumental" and added that "Stokowski finds throughout the work a ferocity that is often underplayed." Andrew Achenbach in the Gramophone compared the Boult recording with Stokowski's and wrote: "Not only does Stokowski give the more fervent, dramatic reading, the playing of his hand-picked band has greater conviction, composure and sheen than Boult's hard-working LPO." David Betts in the RVW Society Journal remarked that "one is swept along by Stokowski's interpretative mastery" while Robert Matthew-Walker summed things up in International Record Review with the words: "No other commercially issued recording touches the inherent profundity and majesty of this mighty work as does Stokowski's." Not bad for a conductor who used to be dismissed as a 'charlatan'!
