Anyone keeping an eye on the "LSO Live" broadcasts from yesteryear will know that barely a day goes by when a new upload of a single work appears. Pollini Schubert Piano Sonata 20 D. 959. It comes in six parts, which is irritating, and the sound is only 'acceptable', but this is a great performance, in my view. Pollini at his very best, just as he was discovering a more warmly expressive side to his pianism. He has the audience in the palm of his hand, notably at the end, when the Rondo theme is played in fragments, a moment that can only work 'live', I think. I know he did, because I was part of it! (I am not the poster, though). The date I am pretty sure is given wrongly, this was 1975 not 1973. I don't think Pollini began his Schubert recitals (in London anyway) before 1975. The performance way surpasses the later DG recording.

There a couple of "Planets" performances on the Tube which rather took me aback. The first one from Singapore has a decidedly overweight Andrew Litton whose histrionic conducting in "Mars" had me concerned that he might have suffered a heart attack on the podium right then and there ...

The other performance comes from a thoroughly miserable-looking Esa-Pekka Salonen whose Philharmonia performance has a special treat right at the end. While the female chorus is still fading away into the distance, a piece by Jody Talbot suddenly pops up before "Neptune" is over. At least Colin Matthews had the good grace to allow "Neptune" to finish before launching into "Pluto" ...

Oh, I see the Talbot piece isn't new but was premiered at the RFH in 2012. An effective little piece that retains the female choir but I'd have still preferred the voices to fade away into the distance as Holst intended.

Just finished watching L'heure. Will watch L'Enfant later.

Watched both (big TV screen and sound put through hi-fi) last night here (trying to remember where we'd seen them live: Glyndebourne Touring in Oxford, perhaps).
Thoroughly enjoyed L'heure (What a set!) and quite enjoyed L'enfant, though it is not quite as magical as it could be; in that the Hockney set for me reigns supreme, though Opera North's production last year was very clever too.
