Many are probably aware of this, Gieseking in Beethoven's 5 PC. Recorded in Berlin in 1944. Genuine stereo with the sound of artillery in the background. The sound is amazing considering the age of the recording and the conditions under which it was made...

Here's Benno Moiseiwitsch playing Liszt's paraphrase/transcription of Wagner's overture to Lohengrin.
It is a tremendous feat of pianistic dexterity, memory and sheer bravura. If you can stay right to the end, I find his closing gesture and remarks are quite hilarious, given what drama has just gone before.

Thanks to whoever put the youtube progs of the old charmer, Artur Rubinstein, on this. I have told this on the old boards but.......many years ago a friend and I were descending the Artists'stairs at the RAH and Artur passed us on the way up. He gave us both a sweeping bow, hat in hand, and said "Good morning young ladies". It made our day.......and he was a wonderful pianist too.
We were 18 and impressionableLast edited by salymap; 22-03-11, 09:04.

(Beats doing the washing up)"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Rudolf Serkin with Vienna Phil under Ormandy performing Mozart Piano Concerto in C major, op 467. Some wonderful interplay between piano and woodwind, imo and a wonderful 1st movement cadenza
