without luck I've been trying to find out on the internet what other works by other composers make use of the hammerschlag. Do the Carmelite nuns exit to hammer blows, for example ?

I believe Poulenc pointed out that wherever Les Dialogues des Carmelites had been staged the sound effect was wrong....except in Paris.

I assumed you meant that it should be felt viscerally, a physical feeling. When I first heard the 8th, in the RAH, I could feel the organ more than hear it, but I've never experienced it in the same way listening on CD or the radio. I'm not sure that it would be possible unless one has very large & powerful speakers (& understanding neighbours )

What does a hammerblow of fate sound like?
Not terrifying. I think it would have a sense of inevitability - almost something you see approaching & are resigned to. Fassolt killing Fafner sounds about right.

The guillotine (presumably Parisians are more familiar with the true sound).

Perhaps pointlessly reviving this old thread, I recently listened to Bernstein's 1967 Columbia recording of Mahler 6, and I thought I heard something resembling a 3rd hammer blow in the finale at about 26:01. Not sure if others here have the same impression; any thoughts would be good to read.

BTW, speaking of the NY Phil and Mahler 6, Forumites here might be interested in checking out a concert recording off the NY Phil's site of Semyon Bychkov recently leading Mahler 6 with them:

We thank you for your interest in NYPhil+ and hope you will enjoy our content across social media, YouTube, Apple Music Classical, and other channels.

FWIW, there's also a Mahler 6 with its current music director:

Just had a quick listen - I think what you hear is Lenny dropping his wallet.

                      Excellent Mahler-hammer in Liverpool!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
