    As much as I love the VPO/Walter version - I find it hard to match his pioneering stereo recording in 1961 - only Barbirolli and Abbado's most recent effort come close to my ears .

    Every bar just sounds so right to me. What an impact it must have made on its first release - no wonder Deryck Cooke waxed so lyrical in Gramophone.

      Not having heard either of the Walters I'm told my EMI Klemperer with the NPO of 1967 still takes a lot of beating - literally in the case of the vinyl, which I reckon has stood up remarkably well.

        SA - Walter's Sony Mahler is now available in a very cheap box .

        I have never quite got on with Klemperer's EMI Mahler - there is a magnificent Resurrection or two live though.
