Yes he was, and it's wonderful to see him getting the level of appreciation that he didn't always have when the more visually appealing Beecham, Sargent and Barbirolli (wonderful conductors, all, of course) were around. He began (well, almost) his career with Diaghilev, as successor to Ansermet, and knew Daphnis from about 1919.

Yes Munch, yes Monteux, but for an authentically-voiced French version the Cluytens complete stereo version is hard to surpass. Best heard on the Toshiba 1400 series reissue (14088, but I would say that wouldn't I)... Almost forgotten these days after his tragic early death, Eduardo Mata with the Dallas SO is marvellous, first on Navigator, palpable improvements on RCA Sound Dimension 24/96. It may still be out there somewhere...

Did anyone else get the Manuel Rosenthal box on Accord? Very good, very French Daphnis in there too, with the Orchestra of the Paris Opera...

Yes indeed! I've loved the Rosenthal performance ever since finding the old Adès CD of it in the Lyon FNAC many years ago. I've been banging on about it to friends ever since and that Accord box is full of delights. Cluytens (Testament reissue) is one of the loveliest of the French versions. But the two complete Munch RCA recordings (one of them the "usual" one, the later one available in the Japanese RCA Munch edition) are the ones I turn to most often. I'll certainly give one of those a spin. What a nice anniversary to celebrate.

Paying homage to the centenary now. Orchestre National de Lyon/Jun Märkl.

It's been said before, but this may be the most magnificently orchestrated work in the repertoire. So many wonderful effects throughout the work. My particular favourite is the flickering light portrayed by tremolo strings (at the beginning of track 8 on this recording)

The Montreal/Dutoit was my first digital purchase - the CD I bought on 1.03.83. It still sounds amazing.

Mine was bought a couple of months later.
Still my only CD with the complete work.
The interpretation as well as recording are amazing indeed.
