Saturday Classics, James Jolly at 3pm on the 5th May R3

James Jolly chooses from some of his favourite recordings from the legacy of Finnish conductor, Paavo Berglund, who died in January, aged 82.
Berglund's 60 year old career saw him take the helm of some of Europe's best orchestras.

The playlist says: 'Timings are shown as time of the day.' This is much better for the advance listings than the timings from the beginning of the programme.

Pity that in practice there aren't any timings at all.

The Berglund theme is a good one, but four single movements, plus Finlandia and Vltava, lessen the interest a bit.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

A disappointing programme - far too 'bitty' and I lost interest half-way through. Berglund deserves an in-depth programme, with contributions from people who played with/under him and even perhaps a work or two from the BBC Archives. The programme that was offered could have been given by anyone really. What has happened to the 'From the Archives' series?
