If offered a 6 oz fillet steak I'm happy to eat the lot. A 16 oz steak, and I'd leave most of it. Too much food on the plate is simply off-putting, and leads to waste.

I continue to follow my normal patterns of eating, sleeping, going to work, spending time outdoors etc. so 'thons are really wasted on me. One question might be "Did you change your normal listening habits?". I rarely use listen again as my computer is in my office and my hi-fi/TV/Sky+/DVD etc setup in another room. Unless you use listen again extensively, or suspend your normal existence, I don't see the point.

Having said which I agree with Roehre. I heard some good stuff, and no need to go on about the dross, tweeting etc. Graham Johnson at length, snippets of Alfred Brendel talking, some great recordings and live performances, a couple of interesting BALs....I love Schubert above most things, so enjoyed the bits I listened to, which did not include anything involving SMP, CBH, TS, etc., or anything after my bedtime.

As someone who is completely opposed to the concept of composerthons, I don't think the fact that they allow rarely broadcast works to be heard is anything like a sufficient excuse for them. It would be like saying that R3 should mount a complete Shakespeare season (performed continuously without a break) so that people could at least hear the rarely performed plays. The point is that R3 can perfectly well broadcast those rarely heard works without having a composerthon to do so - and it ought to be doing that, if it believes the works are worth hearing, as well as broadcasting the works of composers we hardly ever hear. That is surely part of R3's public service remit, rather than playing again and again the most frequently heard works of the most frequently heard composers.

I still don't really see the point of these fests, but the baggage that went with this one made it worse.
Franz is unwell,Schubertlab (or was it lav?),trailers and twits(yes twits!) and the rest.

I’ve deleted the message I was going to post. You’ve said it all and exactly. Let’s not give R3 an excuse for not doing what it should be normally doing.

I agree with most of message 5.

I have never listened to these marathon airings of one composer as I think they are purely marketing stunts and have no place in the remit of a public service broadcaster.

As it happens the condescending “listen with mother” presentation style of some of the announcers is irritating in the extreme, and, from the three visits I made, were there not more frequent “trails” than usual?

This gimmick started with Bach some years ago, but I do not remember hearing Radio 3 air any programme devoted to say his cantatas, motets, or organ music since. To my mind, they just use the composer’s music for their own egotistic and marketing ends.

Only when the BBC is broken up, and Radio 3 becomes a separate subscription service will we see a return to the old Third Programme ethos and standards.

Except that if that happens there will be NO Radio 3 at all just another CFM

Isn't that rather doubtful reasoning? I would have thought the very opposite would happen, were that to be the case. Either that, or such a private station would not survive out there in the "real world".

Indeed, it's like the argument about taking away subsidy from music. Fine if you are happy for there to be NO opera and NO orchestral music.

Do you or I pay anything to CFM? No, and I am sure neither of us would pay, or would want to pay, a penny to a CFM clone.

Indeed , and there aren't enough people to pay for the Radio 3 that you (or I) would like if it was purely commercial.

Which brings to mind an analogy -- should we all have filled our tanks with Schubert this week because there may be shortages in the offing?

My memory may be slipping, but do you really think CFM in any way reinstates "the old Third Programme ethos and standards"?
