    Schubert - the poll

The utter extremes of views here, as elsewhere, suggest a poll might be useful. I will try to construct some options which are as nuanced as possible (like Schubert/hate Schubert -ssss , like total immersion/hate total immersion, thought this one was good, thought it was terrible - and all stations between).

I hope as many members as have views will contribute. And if you have any suggestions as to the kind of poll option to offer, please let me know. This is for information gathering, not for pursuing an agenda.

Oh, yes, and I'll make the votes secret so you need not fear a duffing up!

Hmmm that looks a difficult task to have set yourself, French Frank!

Some way should be portrayed of how much of the actual week posters devoted to the Schubertathon.

That said, it might prove difficult adducing opinions on that basis. For instance, I personally thought the Schubertathon A Bad Thing for the same reasons I opposed the Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Tchaikovsky/Stravinsky weeks, namely Too Much Of A Good Thing inasmuch as they elbowed everything and everybody else off Radio 3, though in my case I am not a fan of Schubert in general, and for both of these reasons gave last week a complete miss.

I quite agree S-A. But I being one who thinks the 'thons are a bad thing and therefore didn't listen at all, people are free to evaluate my view as they wish. It still conveys a reaction even if I can't say anything, good or bad, about the current jamboree.

Yes, that's OK as far as it goes, but someone's bound to come back and query the value of the opinion, in my case rightly accusing the holder of "not even having bothered to listen to any of the programmes, and therefore not given the -thon a chance".

          FF,

I hate this total immersion approach -
I hardly listened to the Beethoven- Bach and Mozart weeks (as the works of these composers are very well present in my collection), missed unfortunately the Tchaikovsky/Stravinsky for the best part through family circumatances

I liked quite a lot of what I was able/choose to listen to, especially on TtN (the operas particularly)

I completely disliked the usual inane Breakfast twatter and that of Essential Classics, not to mention the trailers

For those really interested: the playlists are not encouraging to listen selectively. Many pieces are not announced in advance, if at all. If this type of back-to-back programming is meant to be taken seriously, this is a serious omission.

Ultimately -despite disliking the format- I listened more to R3 than I usually do -sooo much to discover, sooo much unknown pieces- that my final judgement here is positive.

How about an option for "Total immersion is OK but nine days is too long"

Well, let's be honest, they have a point (as far as it goes). But it's still 'valuable' to show how many people so oppose the fundamental concept that they don't listen. No?

But what about the twitter, tweets and witter (and perhaps twats and weets for all I know)?

I think Roehre's original sums up the whole exercise

Well, no disrespects whatever to our good friend Roehr, but his #5 does rather illustrate my point...

No extremes amongst those with whom I've discussed it. They all thought how worthwhile it was to be able to hear so much great music, so varied in format and scoring, from one of the greatest of them all, almost whenever one switched on. But there again, they were all far too busy - as was I - to listen to it all - which surely wasn't R3's intention that anyone should, anyway.

Those who ignored it from "principle" did most certainly cut off their noses, as the saying goes. Their loss, I feel.

                          What was R3's intention, Simon?

To boldly go where no one has been tawdry enough to go before?

I haven't got much to add to Roehre's comments and agree with his ultimate positive conclusion. Incidentally, today's Sunday Indie radio reviewer gave it a five-out-of five rating.

What I meant was that I don't think they would have expected people to stop all other listening and just put on R3 because they had the chance to hear all Schubert's works.
