Should Schubert have been paired with another, and if so, who?

I think I can appreciate their intentions in what they are doing. I have heard much new music, and re-discovered other pieces.
But it is all too much.
Remember the Tchaikovsky week - he was paired with Stravinsky.
I would have preferred something like a "Schubert and Shostakovich" week.

Which composer would you have liked to have been paired with Schubert?

And if it were to be done again , which other composers would you like pairing?

Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky were paired in order to fill a week of music, and the latter was certainly influenced by the former.
Schubert could have been coupled with his champion Brahms, for which combination applies the same (though Schumann fills in quite another influence on Brahms obviously.)

Ijust don't think it should be 24/7 Flay. Perhaps 6 hours a day of one composer for a week, leaving live concerts ,[ which we must be missing out on] and TtN to be varied as usual.

Oh I agree, but it's happened, and will surely happen again. No doubt it gives employment to the BBC trailer dept. (which appears to have the biggest budget in the BBC!)

          Palestrina and Merzbow ?

Many years ago the late great John Stevens told me that if you wanted to have a really new experience you should shave your head and buy a new pair of shoes ! If one has a new experience at each extremity then the middle will experience new things as well !

so............ why not find the extreme edges of music and put them together ?

Yes, I know, I know. As soon as I had posted I realised my error . Since then I have been writing it out 100 times as penance.

It could only happen on this MB. I knew it was just a matter of time before the hatchet fell

I think one could defend the use of 'who' here if one took this as an aposiopesis - ie, not a question of "with whom" but rather a broken-off clause implying "who [is it that Board Members might wish to suggest]"...

Would you like me to change it?

I've left myself wide open for typo abuse now.

"Aposiopesis"! What a fantastic word: I'd never heard it before, and yet it's so ...

No, my punishment shall be to look at it for ever as it is.

Mind you, I think Vinny has a good point. Let sleeping dogs lie.

"This device often portrays its users as overcome with passion (fear, anger, excitement) or modesty.

I rest my case. It's the Schubertathon that's to blame!

If we must have fests then I could possibly live with, definitely not 24/7, pairings.

With Schubert, Shostakovich would would give what I feel should be a necessary contrast, as would Prokofiev.

As to future pairings Haydn and Britten?
