Perhaps Lang Lang will follow in the footsteps of Sir Ian McKellen and Robert Vaughan and 'guest' on Corrie....Ken could engage his services for a charity concert (tickets from Dev's shop

Lang Lang always reminds me of a mixture of Liberace and Bobby Crush!

There's a conjunction the mental image of which has just spoiled my afternoon....

PS I enjoyed the writing on the page of this blog announcing the forthcoming biopic with Michael Douglas as Liberace...http://blogs.villagevoice.com/dailym..._douglas_2.php
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm afraid you might have also revealed yourself as being 'of a certain age'. Lots of younger members might have heard of Liberace, but Bobby Crush was very much of his time. I feel he might have been a Hughie Green discovery; his unnecessary flinging around of the arms was very Lang Lang-ish.

I believe my grandmother owned this LP:

Oh dear! He hasn't aged well. I hadn't realised he was only about 16/17 when he was on Opportunity Knocks.

Let's hear it for Russ Conway and Mrs Mills while we're about it . . . .

I think some of us are being a bit harsh on Mr Mr Lang Lang. He was callow once - weren't we all? - but he is now, IMHO, turning out some performances well worth listening to.

All great fun so far, but what about my question at the outset of this thread, do people like Lang Lang have a function in encouraging people who know little about serious music to explore further ?

I'm not sure I would think if someone developed a real appreciation for music because of Lang Lang then perhaps he does good. All I can do is base my opinion on how he played when I saw him play and it was not great. However I am not anti-Lang Lang, if he has improved as he might well have done then I would have no problems going to see him again or even buying his CDs. However I do feel that he is a bigger personality than a pianist and this may have a detrimental effect on other young musicians particularly other Chinese pianists such as Yuja Wang and Yundi Li both of whom I prefer to Lang Lang.

Even if he is a force for good in the classical music world and he inspires a whole new generation of young musicians. Will this make up for me getting several emails a week from Amazon and HMV asking me to buy Lang Lang's CDs? I don't think so...
