    However, quoting music under copyright might land you in hot water. I recall Turnage piece "Hammered out" in the Proms two years ago.
    Did the nod to Beyoncé Knowles land Turnage in hot water?

      Yes, it was that Beyoncé inspired music which did land Turnage in hot water.

        Stanford could be rather in a quoting/alluding spree as well:

        E.g. Stanford's Symphony no.3 "Irish" (1888):
        mvt.1 coda --> Beethoven 9 mvt 1 coda
        mvt 3 --> Brahms 2 mvt 2
        mvt 4 --> Brahms 1 mvt 4 (theme on strings)

          I suspect Les Noces was an influence on Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Can't think why Igor didn't sue for plagiarism.

            I don't know whether anyone caught the documentary about canals on BBC4 the other night ?
            The shameless plagiarism of the music of Simon Jeffes in the soundtrack was extraordinary ........... he must be spinning in his grave

              Richard Strauss not only nicked from Bruch:
              the main melody of the Festliches Präludium sounds familiar somehow?
              Listen to the theme and variations (2nd mvt) of Brahms' Sextet opus 18 (or the composer's own arrangement for piano-solo) and you know

                And why is everybody mentioning Mahler quoting Brahms' First symphony's finale at the beginning of the former's 3rd symphony only?
                Listening to the opening of the 3rd symphony's finale brings some strong recollections of Beethoven's string quartet opus 135, doesn't it?
                (Apart from the pre-echo of the 4th symphony, but that's another story)

                  Moving on the song 'I'll be seeing you' strongly resembles the finale of Mahler 3.

                  Also 'Goldfinger' and 'Moon River' start with the same 3 notes!

                      The horn melodies which dominate Schumann's Konzertstück (piano & orchestra) in G opus 92 are literally quoted in Brahms' first piano concerto's 1st mvt.

                        Does it include a section on 'Who nicked what from whom?'

                          The Brahms-Schumann relation as mentioned in post #40 isn't, according to the index.

                            And they probably aren't, but since Brahms lived with the Schumanns for some time (and was so close to them temperamentally), it's entirely possible there's an unconscious connexion.

                              Certainly true, though in this particular case I am doubtful whether it is subsconciously done.
                              IMO most likely subconscious quotes or similarities with Schumann piano works however are to be found in Brahms' late piano pieces.

                                On reflection, I think I agree with you.
