iPhone stops New York Mahler 9

I heard about this the other day on NPR News.

I was amazed that this person was NOT escorted out the door.

Now what I do know is that the NY Phil has many concerts on their website and I do believe this will be one of them.

It will be interesting to see IF this was edited out of the broadcast.

GOOD on Mr. Gilbert, BAD on the audience member for NOT respecting the music and other audience members

Why was the phone in silent mode in the first place? It should have been OFF.

If people can't sit through a concert without their phone being on - perhaps they shouldn't be there in the first place!

Old Grumpy, ordinarily I'd agree with you but if you read the New York Times story linked to by BSP I think you see why this happened. Having read the link I rather agree with Caliban that you do have to feel for the guy. Alan Gilbert's response is, I think, most gracious and better by far than those baying for the poor guy's blood.

Yes, I did note that, and yes you have a point regarding this particular case - I think my general comment still pertains though. There are a number of people in concerts who insist on taking their phones out to check them during the performance. I can only presume they are switched on, as the backlit display causes an annoying distraction in a darkened auditorium.

I, too, have seen that myself at concerts. This incident has been given such wide publicity that I hope that concert hall managers and punters will be much more alert to the potential disruption of new technology. For example, perhaps the Albert Hall could repeat the mobile phone switch off alert before the commencement of the second half as well as just the first. Many, and I include myself in this, will make a call during the interval so a reminder would be helpful to some. I would prefer such alerts to come from the stage just before the conductor makes his/her entrance. At the same time a request to limit coughing could also most effectively be made. I can't see concert-goers wanting to hand in mobile phones along with their coats. I certainly wouldn't and hardly ever hand my coat in never mind my phone.

Concert hall managers have been slow to see the pitfalls that new technology can bring and they need to raise their game in order to make attending a concert as much of a pleasure to all concert-goers, old and young alike.

I had some communication with the management of the Sage, Gateshead in regard to the use of camera phones during concerts (jazz/world, rather than classical). Despite an announcement that photography was not permitted, there were some who insisted on taking photographs (with flash) during the performance. Apparently the ushers used to challenge these people, but the artists actually asked the Sage to desist - as the constant movement of the ushers was more distracting than the photography!

It all comes down to rudeness and ignorance, basically.
